Numerous proverbs have been presented to mankind regarding child rearing and education. Numerous philosophers, educators, and noble individuals have shared their thoughts and beliefs behind what is best for today’s youth who will ultimately become tomorrow’s leaders. Those of us who have chosen the education profession often chuckle at what is considered the “the next new thing in education” as it often resembles a prior practice but with a new name. There is one common denominator that all educational theories have in common, a central point that all students have which is rarely evaluated but often discussed within America’s educational system and that is the role of the parents and community that make up each student’s environment.

No matter what a person’s belief regarding child rearing or a child’s education, there are two important factors that cannot be avoided. The preparation of a child to become a productive citizen requires a solid education that helps mold and form a child’s interests and abilities. Secondly, each child needs a safe environment in order to be nurtured and encourage continued growth in those interests and abilities while receiving love and support by those who surround them.

There are numerous resources available to educators that help equip and train in the most current educational practices. However, there are few resources developed to help train parents in how to support their child while their child moves through the educational system. It is imperative for parents to learn how to actively engage in their child’s education because parents know their child better than anyone. By knowing what is being expected from the student, understanding the approaches being used by the educational community, and acknowledging the limitations often faced by individual teachers allows the parent to know how to best provide the best support structure through a safe and nurturing environment at home.

Most educators would agree that students with active parents who work to provide educational experiences outside the classroom often have a better understanding of content, demonstrate more self-discipline, and have improved self confidence within and outside the classroom. With parents’ willingness to partner with the educational community, the gaps within the educational system will begin to close as each child’s education moves beyond the classroom and into a way of life. It really does take a village to raise a child and it is our goal to help develop Education Beyond the Classroom by Partnering with Parents to Guide Student Success.

Mr. DicksonJ. Gavin Dickson, Ed.M. is passionate about education and helping guide both students and parents through the education process.  Mr. Dickson's desire is to work with both the student and the parents, to develop an educational experience that will last a lifetime.
